You can’t read this Now, to the rest of you. For centuries, people have been claiming they can predict the gender of your baby whilst you are still pregnant. Some say that you’re having a boy if you’re carrying all out front or low and a girl if you’re carrying all around and high. Or there’s the old ‘wedding ring over the belly’ trick – if you tie your wedding ring onto a string and hold it over your belly, apparently the way it swings can tell the gender – if it moves in circles it’s a boy, side to side it’s a girl.
Other gender predictors include the state of your skin or your hair, your mood, whether or not you had morning sickness, the shape of your nose, the colour of your urine, the exact age you were when you conceived, even the position you were in when you got pregnant. Unfortunately, for anyone who has wanted to actually find out what sex their baby is, none of these old wives tales or gender predictors have any bearing in reality whatsoever.
They may be fun to do, but they aren’t going to give you any clear cut answers. Ultrasound scans finally made it possible to see whether you were having a girl or a boy. Until fairly recently, one would have to wait until the 20 week scan or later to see the genitals clearly. Now though, research is being done into whether or not the gender of a fetus is obvious at the 12 week scan. At the moment, most sonographers will say that they cannot tell you the gender of your baby at your first scan.
This is, perhaps, because they aren’t aware of ‘the nub theory’.
First Trimester Scans
Mean Sac Diameter measurement is used to determine gestational age before a Crown Rump length can be clearly measured. The average sac diameter is determined by measuring the length, width and height then dividing by 3. The quantitative maternal serum beta HCG peaks at approximately 10 weeks and then reduces. It will be difficult to see if the mother has a retroverted uterus or fibroids.
The GS is an echogenic ring surrounding an anechoic centre. An ectopic pregnancy will appear the same but it will not be within the endometrial cavity.

Fetus should be examined in a mid-sagittal plane. Fetal neck should be in a neutral position. Fetal movement should be awaited to distinguish between amnion and overlying fetal skin, because, at this gestation, both structures appear as thin membranes. This is achieved by waiting for spontaneous fetal movement away from the amniotic membrane or by manually bouncing the fetus off the amnion. Calipers should be placed on the inner borders of the nuchal fold. Calipers should be placed perpendicular to the fetal body axis.
At least three NT measurements should be obtained, with the mean value of those used in risk assessment and patient counseling. Some authors recommend measuring the nuchal thickness twice and averaging the values 1 , while others advocate measuring it three times and using the largest value for risk assessment 2.
Our 12 Week Scan
Our 12 Week Scan The day was finally here! We were off to see our little baby on the screen for our 12 week ultrasound. As I sat in the waiting room next to hubby, I looked around at all the posters on the wall. They were full of encouraging words and cute as a button photos. I always feel a little strange in waiting rooms like that. Everyone seems to speak in hushed tones and quite often you get glares from others within the room.
It is recommended (but is optional) that all pregnant women have a scan at the end of the first trimester at around 12 weeks of pregnancy. First trimester ultrasonic scans may show ‘soft’ markers for chromosomal abnormalities, such as an increased fetal nuchal translucency (back of the neck) to enable detection of Down’s syndrome fetuses.
The Nonstress Test During Pregnancy First trimester combined screening Because NT screening has a relatively high rate of error on its own, your practitioner may offer what’s known as a combined screening, where NT ultrasound results are combined with one or two blood tests that measure and compare your levels of hCG and PAPP-A pregnancy associated plasma protein A , two hormones produced by the fetus and passed into your bloodstream. How accurate is nuchal translucency?
NT results by themselves have an accuracy rate of just 70 to 75 percent. That means that the test misses 25 to 30 percent of babies with Down syndrome or other chromosome disorders. Pairing the results of the first trimester combined screening with the results of the NT screening can improve the accuracy of detection for Down syndrome to between 83 and 92 percent. The results of an NT screen can also be combined with two other types of blood screenings, the quad screen known as an integrated screening or noninvasive prenatal testing NIPT , to provide a more accurate risk assessment.
If your NT measurements are high If your NT or combined screening results are high and your baby may be at an increased risk for having a genetic abnormality, your practitioner will likely offer a diagnostic test like chorionic villus sampling CVS or amniocentesis. Because increased NT measurements are also associated with fetal heart defects, your practitioner might also suggest a fetal echocardiogram at around 20 weeks to screen for heart defects.
